DARE’s Adoption Process
STEP 1: Complete DARE’s Adoption Application
The first step towards adopting your new pet is filling out the adoption application. Complete it to the best of your ability. Our application will ask you questions about persons in your residence, your living environment, your past and current experiences with pets, and the qualities you are looking for in your new pet. It also asks you to provide personal references, and a veterinary reference if you are a current or former pet owner, to enable us to more clearly ascertain your ability to be a responsible, compassionate, and humane pet owner. We ask questions not to pry, but to help us find the right dog for your home and family. So, please be truthful when filling out your application. The more honest you are with your answers, the better we can match you to the dog of your dreams.
Is there a dachshund on our website that interests you?
If you have seen a dachshund on our website that interests you, please include its name on your application, and we will give the match serious consideration.
What if I don’t see a dachshund on your website that is the right fit for my family?
If you don’t see your “dream dog” at this time, or if the dachshund of your choice has already been adopted, don’t be discouraged. Submit your adoption application anyway!
There are always dogs in DARE’s foster care program undergoing physical and emotional evaluations before being posted on our website. As these dogs are readied for permanent placement, our members will search all on-file applications first before looking elsewhere for suitable owners. Often dachshunds are matched up with suitable applicants without ever being listed on the website.
STEP 2: Reference Checks
Upon receipt of your application, a DARE member will be assigned to work with you. Your DARE representative will be available to answer any questions you may have and will be responsible for calling or writing to your references.
STEP 3: Home Visit
The last step of the adoption application process is setting up your home visit with your DARE representative. At times, DARE may ask for the assistance of another rescue group in performing the home visit, if we do not have a DARE member residing near your area.
STEP 4: Approval
Upon satisfactory completion of your reference checks and home visit, you will be approved to adopt!
The dachshund you adopt will become a member of your family. Everyone in your residence must understand a rescue will need the love, patience, and guidance of every member of the family.
A NOTE ABOUT LONG-DISTANCE ADOPTIONS
If you are adopting your dachshund long distance, aside from the adoption fee, you will also be responsible for driving or flying to FLORIDA to complete the adoption. We DO NOT ship animals or set up out-of-state transports.
ADOPTION FEES
Pure Bred Dachshund: $300
Dachshund Mixes: $200
Senior Pure Bred Dachshunds or Dachshund Mixes (10 years or older): $150
